My mind was inundated by a multitude of words I wanted to say to her, but that I did not utter: my parents had educated me well after all. I was thinking to myself: "Please don't keep my file and don't ever contact me again!" And "I am being realistic: you really have no idea of what you're doing and how to match positions with candidates regardless of the recruiter title on your business card." Quietly, I stood up. She looked offended by my obvious declination of her offer. I did not care. I was not offended though: I was rather amused. I extended my hand, shook hers, thanked her and left.

The movie Miracle is without a doubt one of the best examples of how a team goes through the four stages of development and ultimately the community spirit appears. Herb Brooks (played by Kurt Russell) brings in a new player just a few weeks before the beginning of the 1980 Olympic opening ceremony. The players are upset and the chemistry of the team is compromised. This comes to a head when four team members ask to see Herb and tell him it is not fair. Herb asks why not. One player responds with - "we're a family" and this is the point that shows Herb he has a solid team that is committed to each other. And after all isn't that what the community spirit is all about?

Sometimes I joke that time spent networking is time spent "NOT working." Enterprising CEOs are selective about where and with whom they network. You won't find them at your breakfast club meeting. CEOs research what they need, locate the source and ask. They create a network of colleagues, clients, clarity project network, vendors and acquaintances they can depend on to deliver anything from information to referrals.
The third reason for YOU to call customers is that you appear more successful when you do. Just reflect on the story I shared with you. If you HAD to place a bet right now regarding the success of all the clarity project network I described, who would you bet on as being the most successful? You'd probably bet on the consultant that called me. When you call your customers, they see you as someone who's doing her job well and obviously has it together. If they ever become a consultant on your team, they'll feel confident that their recruiter is a leader!

To get a hold of the teamwork concept and find ways to create teamwork where you work, you need go no further than your mailbox. Do I have your attention? Movies are one of the greatest ways to grow and develop. That's right movies, and I don't mean training movies although they do have a place in growth and development. I'm talking about the movies you can get from Blockbuster or Netflix.

And then we get to the gold standard; wisdom. This is the proper use of knowledge; it is taking the knowledge and thinking deeply about how what we know will impact not only us, also future generations.

Human nature seems to endow us with the ability to size up everybody but ourselves. As painful as it may be, feedback is a big contributor to our Leadership Development. Feedback is often a key element in personal learning and improvement. It helps us to size up and see ourselves as others see us. We may not agree with the perceptions of others, but unless we know how we're perceived, we stand little chance of improving our relationships and effectiveness with them. Feedback also gives us another opportunity to reflect on our behavior from the view point of others. It provides outside perspectives on the exploration of our inner space.
