How, then, do managers transcend from a traditional, transactional approach to leadership, in which the manager negotiates with the subordinate: "Do this, and this is what I'll give you." Often, these are not explicit conversations, but rather implicit understandings. The employee knows that if he does 'this and this,' and not 'that and that,' he'll receive something in return. Does this method of 'leadership' build commitment from staff? Does it enroll the individual in a common mission and vision? Or is it oriented more towards compliance and implicit consent of not rocking the boat?

I once led a Leadership Development discussion group with a group of university presidents. As we discussed passion and commitment, a consensus emerged that society has robbed many people of their pride-of-craft. This group of leading academics concluded that universities have been major contributors to the problem. They have helped build a job class system that puts many white-collar professionals well ahead of blue-collar trades people and technicians. But we all agreed that a highly skilled mechanic who loves his or her work and is continually growing and developing in it is a much stronger and productive leader than a doctor who feels trapped in a system he or she despises.

My mind was inundated by a multitude of words I wanted to say to her, but that I did not utter: my parents had educated me well after all. I was thinking to myself: "Please don't keep my file and don't ever contact me again!" And "I am being realistic: you really have no idea of what you're doing and how to match positions with candidates regardless of the recruiter title on your business card." Quietly, I stood up. She looked offended by my obvious declination of her offer. I did not care. I was not offended though: I was rather amused. I extended my hand, shook hers, thanked her and left.

There is NO system that replaces people completely. Learn the personality colors or styles. Learn the art of active listening. Understand human behavior. Every wealthy person knows how people think. Every successful network marketer that I know or have trained under, is a master of understanding people and behavior.

A hair extension can be made of human hairs or it may be a synthetic product that has been designed to look and feel more like hair does. The choice to use human over synthetic may be changed once the price difference of human versus synthetic is explained by your beauty consultant. The human locks can be as much as two times the cost of the man-made pieces.

If a corporation introduces new solutions, the instructional designers could have the duty to collect, course of, and analysis data systematically. As long as you aren't one of them, this simply means more to go around to those left standing. And even in a much smaller market, that can feel pretty good.
